Review: New Christmas Music

COLLIDE Staff - Originally posted Monday, November 24, 2008 -

With Christmas just around the corner, the time to start listening to Christmas music has come, if you haven't started already. Here are a few new albums that we recommend to get you into the Christmas spirit.

Glory in the Highest - Shane and Shane

What’s Cool: Shane and Shane’s first Christmas Album, Glory in the Highest, is packed with tight harmonies, rhythmic guitars, and vocal runs that will have any Shane and Shane fan giggling with glee. Glory in the Highest gives listeners fresh versions of familiar Christmas songs and even a few originals.

What’s Not: Unless you’re a huge Shane and Shane fan, their musical and vocal styles can get old.

The Bottom line: Shane and Shane do a good job of mixing fresh material with the classics of old.

O Holy Night - Sara Groves

What’s Cool: Sara Groves, who is known for her unique musical style, has assembled a refreshing collection of Christmas tunes on O Holy Night. Though the song lyrics may be familiar, Groves has rewritten many of the melodies to create a truly original version of each song.

What’s Not: As with any Christmas album, there’s always a song or two that crosses over into cheesy territory, and “Toy Packaging” is the guilty one here.

The Bottom Line: In an industry of recycled Christmas carols, O Holy Night is a breath of fresh air and a “must buy” for Christmas music fans.

The Dawn of Grace - Sixpence None The Richer

What’s Cool: From the group who brought you the hit singles “Kiss Me” and “There She Goes,” comes the new Christmas album, The Dawn of Grace. The combination of traditional Christmas carols with soothing vocals and ambient tones makes for a peaceful soundtrack to any winter’s eve.

What’s Not: A handful of songs may prompt you to skip ahead to the more recognizable tracks.

The Bottom Line: Despite a few hit-and-miss songs, The Dawn of Grace is a fine addition to your holiday music collection.

A Very Rosie Christmas - Rosie Thomas

What's Cool: Rosie Thomas and friends give us A Very Rosie Christmas, indeed. Rosie's soothing voice paired with warm instruments and ambient melodies make for a magical Christmas album. Not only are the typical Christmas classics unique, Rosie's originals are worth a listen as well. From alt-country to jazz to indie styles, A Very Rosie Christmas will have you enjoying Christmas music in a whole new way.

What's Not: The last two tracks are skippable and should be replaced with more amazing music.

The Bottom Line: We could hardly ask for a better Christmas gift from Rosie Thomas and friends.
