Purple State of Mind

I’ve been meaning to blog about Purple State of Mind for quite some time now, and the day has finally arrived. Purple State of Mind is a documentary about what happens when a conversation takes place amid the right vs. left, liberal vs. conservative, evangelical vs. everyone else partisanship running so acrimoniously rampant in our culture. What really piqued my interest in the film was the principal involvement of Craig Detwiler (co-author of the excellent A Matrix of Meanings: Finding God in Pop Culture and professor at Fuller Seminary).
In the documentary, Detwiler reunites with his college roommate, John Marks. Their sophomore year, the year they lived together, was Detwiler’s first year as a Christian and Marks’ last. Having known each other for 25 years and possessing radically opposite worldviews, it appears that Detwiler and Marks have plenty to discuss.
From what I’ve read, the film isn’t quite complete, but plans for an upcoming tour of the film are in the making. I’m looking forward to the opportunity to view the film because of its apparent advocacy of engaging culture and participating in conversation with those who view the world differently than us.
