Yesterday was a tough day. I’ll admit to having the following thoughts:

• The more I interact with Christians, the less I believe in the power of the gospel to change people.

• The American Church is largely heartless, directionless, and broken.

Do I believe those things? No. Absolutely not. But yesterday, I did. Or I was close. Whatever.

My saving grace yesterday was twofold: 1) the kind words of friends and 2) what I believe was the Spirit reminding of the Lord’s Prayer and the Prayer of Saint Francis. Since this is a media blog, I should mention that the two most powerful media in the universe seem to be the Spirit and the kind words of friends. Film is in the top five.

Anyway, here are those prayers in case reading/praying them would do you some good. I know they’ve done me a ton of good.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and for ever. Amen.

The Prayer of Saint Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
and where there is sadness, joy.
O Divine Master,
grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood, as to understand;
to be loved, as to love;
for it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to Eternal Life.
Amen.
