Should There Be A Video Standard For Churches?

At WorshipHouseMedia.com you’ll find almost 1,500 sermon illustration videos available to use at your church. At SermonSpice.com you’ll find more than 5,000 videos. Of course, these hundreds and thousands of videos vary in subject, approach, voice, and quality. In terms of quality, you might consider 99% of them to be OK for use during one of your services, or you might consider 99% of them to be unusable. The overwhelming quantity and varying quality of these suggests the need for discernment on the part of church leaders. In other words, we all need to learn to differentiate between availability and usability.

So … should there be a video standard for churches? The great Gary Molander says “Yes!” in this CollideMagazine.com exclusive article. Gary’s work at Floodgate Productions suggests he knows a thing or two about quality church media, but I’m interested to hear what you think.

I think this is a subject that should definitely be discussed. Not simply in terms of quality of the content – which will always be subjective – but also in the technical quality. As in, what should the resolution be; what should the bit rate be? This is something we’ve been discussing at LifeWay for our downloads (http://blogs.lifeway.com/blog/digitalmedia/2008/11/delivering-hd-content-making-d.html).

Should everything be released in both HD and SD? Do churches even need HD yet?

I wholly agree. Video technology has been, and still is, evolving at the speed of light; unless your swimming in it daily, it’s not easy to keep up. I think all aspects of church tech could use a “guide book” of sorts to say, here’s good from bad. But that being said, where do you start? From the DV to RED, SD to HD, ’standards’ are hardly in existence before there is something new to make you question what was previously a standard. Is this what things like expos, conferences, blogs, and websites are for?

At the same time, there are many churches out there that either have no desire to use video or they don’t know how to use it. For these type of churches, just the use of a video is a big step. They don’t know a single thing about quality, nor do they care.
